I Got Tired of the Bait-and-Switch

I needed to transcribe a podcast episode. Simple task, right?

Tried MacWhisper. "Free version" doesn't actually work.
Tried audiotext.com. Same problem.
Tried cloud services. They work, but now my audio's on someone else's server, and I'm paying per use.

So I built Voxtext.

What It Does

Transcribes audio and video files. On your computer. That's it.

No API keys to hunt down. No monthly subscriptions. No uploading your files to the cloud. No surprise paywalls after you've invested time.

Your audio never leaves your computer.

How It Works

1. Drag in your audio or video file
2. Pick a quality level (I use Medium for my podcast)
3. Click transcribe
4. Wait a few minutes
5. Get your files: text, subtitles, HTML for your website, whatever you need

First time you run it, it downloads the AI model (OpenAI Whisper - the good one, completely free). After that, everything's local.

Why I Built It

I run a podcast. I do corporate training. I need transcripts constantly.

Every tool I tried either:

• Didn't actually work for free
• Required subscriptions I didn't want
• Sent my files to the cloud
• Had terrible accuracy

Whisper is incredible and completely open source. It just needed a simple interface that didn't lie to people.

The Honest Part

Processing takes time. A 10-minute file takes 3-5 minutes to transcribe on my laptop. Longer on older machines. This isn't instant - it's thorough.

The Tiny model is fast but mostly useless (1 in 3 words wrong in my testing). Start with Medium.

You need a decent amount of disk space for the AI models (1.5GB for Medium, 3GB for Large).

Pay What You Want

I mean it. $0 works. So does $5, $10, $50.

If Voxtext saves you time or helps your workflow, pay what it's worth to you. If you're broke or just want to try it first, take it for free.
